Department of Planetary Defense
Mission: Defend Earth from natural extraterrestrial threats. These threats include
* Impacts from large comets and meteors.
* Energetic particle ejections from supernovas or solar anomalies.
* Electromagnetic exposure from cosmic radiation or solar flares.
The Department would provide a cohesive approach to resolving these threats. The Department would direct, coordinate and fund Planetary Defense efforts within various agencies including NASA, USAF and FEMA. The Department through a unified approach would coordinate Detection & Threat Analysis (NASA), Threat Mitigation (USAF) and Defense Preparedness (FEMA).
Near Term Goals (Comet Impact Threat):
* Understand the impact threat.
Internal structure and composition of large comets & meteors.
Comet evolutionary breakdown.
Detailed threat analysis of large impact events.
* Develop a space based detection system.
* Develop a mitigation approach
Explore conceptual mitigation systems tailored towards threats.
Develop and test prototype mitigation systems.
* Develop a comprehensive impact shelter plan
Charter survey teams to establish the framework of initial shelter sites.
