Step 12. Construct Shelter Entrance.

At the back end of the shelter carefully cut out with a knife or scissors the black plastic covering the 2 ½ foot diameter entrance hole.

Cut out a 3-foot by 3-foot piece of ¾ inch plywood for the entrance lid.

Nineteen of the shelters in the complex will use 3-foot square plywood lids. The last shelter will use a heavy metal plate. The metal lid will consist of a heavy metal plate with rebar bent to shape and welded to the underside of the plate to form the handle. (The concept is that just prior to impact, personnel will be lowered into 19 shelters. The plywood lid will be put in place and the entrance covered. The last shelter will be loaded. The metal plate will be put into place. A come-along (cable hoist puller) will be attached to the handle in the metal lid and the other end attached to an anchor imbedded in the ground of the shelter. The anchor used should be the same type of earth anchor used to anchor a mobile home against the threat of high winds. The come-along will be tightened to hold this lid in place.)

Place the lids on each shelter and surround the lid on all sides with a wall 3-feet high of sandbags. (Detail 12.1) In the last shelter, imbed the ground anchor in the ground beneath the opening. (Anchor) (Detail 12.2)
