Step 14. Fitting Vent Pipe Assembly
At this point, it is a good time to build the support mechanisms for the interior PVC pipe assembly. Position the top of the pipe assembly to cover the vent hole. Tilt the base until the assembly is level vertically.(Detail 11.1)
Gage the tightness of the fit. Tilt the pipe assembly and remove. Bury a brick or block under the vent. Move the pipe assembly back into place. The connection with the ceiling should be a tight fit. If not, adjust the depth to which the brick is buried to make the connection tight.
The ventilation pump and filter assembly should be mounted to the crossbeams. Determine how this will be accomplished. Have the necessary supplies (lumber, nails, hammer) inside the shelter to accomplish this objective.
Verify the ventilation filter assembly and the pipe assembly can be joined together and the fit can be made tight.
Remove the pipe assembly and the filter box and the ventilation pump. To prevent these units from being damaged during the blast wave, they will be installed after the blast.
Everything inside the shelter should be strapped down. The blast wave and subsequent earthquakes will cause all loose objects to move chaotically inside the shelter injuring shelter occupants and critical goods and materials within the shelter.
