Step 2. Excavate Trench.

Excavate a 12-foot wide by 100-foot long trench to a depth of 7 ½ feet.

* Ideally, this operation can be done using a bulldozer. A bulldozer will typically have a 13 foot-blade.

* If a bulldozer is unavailable, I recommend we turn to the modern farmer for assistance. Most modern farms today have huge "John Deere" tractors. Some of the tractors are equipped with blades. In general, they will also have backhoes, which are used to clear out ditches. These tractors and backhoes could be utilized to excavate the shelter trenches.

* As a last resort, trenches could be dug by hand. If this route is followed, I recommend the ground at the excavation site be rototilled to break up the soil, and the loose layer be removed using shovels and wheelbarrows. If the ground is too hard, a water soaking will loosen the ground. Repeat the process until the proper trench depth is achieved.
